Ceist:65 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Justice whether she intends introducing legislation to abolish the practice of imprisonment as a punishment for debt.
Written Answers. - Punishment for Non-Payment of Debt.
I refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 1, 3, 12 and 19 of 14 October 1993 in which I indicated that my Department is examining the question of providing alternatives to imprisonment in cases of non-payment of debt. Any legislative proposals I may have in relation to this matter will be announced in the usual way.
