Vol. 441 No. 8
128 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to eradicate the giant hogweed which is spreading throughout the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
133 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Health if he has received reports of the damage to human skin which is caused by the giant hogweed; his views on the spread of the weed; the steps, if any, he is taking to alert the public to the dangers of the weed; and the plans, if any, he has for its eradication.
I propose to answer Questions Nos. 128 and 133 together.
I am aware of the potential danger to human skin of contact with the giant hogweed and have been consulting with Ministerial colleagues about measures to control and eradicate it. I hope that a suitable programme can be put in place shortly. Part of such a programme would include public warnings to supplement the publicity which the subject has already attracted in the media.
