Vol. 442 No. 3

Written Answers. - Agricultural Exports to Cuba.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

147 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will consult with the Cuban Ambassador to Britain and Ireland in respect of potential agricultural exports, particularly in the beef and seed potato sectors to Cuba; the extent of agricultural involvement in exports to Cuba at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The only significant exports of Irish products to Cuba in recent years were 2,400 tonnes of milk powders and 556 tonnes of butteroil in 1993 which were arranged through an intermediary company in France. There have been no exports of beef or seed potatoes in recent years. However, in relation to seed potatoes Cuba has expressed an interest in importing supplies from Ireland and my Department has been in contact with the Cuban Ambassador with a view to exploring the potential for developing such a trade.

The development of agri-food exports is of vital importance to Ireland and I have taken many initiatives in recent times, including the proposed establishment of An Bord Bia, to ensure that development is achieved in the most effective manner possible. The House can be assured that every effort is being made to promote and develop Irish agri-food products.
