Vol. 442 No. 3

Written Answers. - Casual Trading Legislation.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

105 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will meet a deputation from the Inner City Organisation Network, ICON, Dublin and a group of unregistered street traders to discuss their concerns in relation to proposed casual trading legislation including the special needs of Dublin City and its long tradition of street trading; and the way in which it can be preserved.

As I pointed out in my statement at the end of Second Stage discussion on the Casual Trading Bill, 1994 in this House on 29 March 1994, I have already obtained wide ranging views of the casual trading community.

Firstly, I have personally met a deputation of Moore Street traders and listened carefully to their concerns relating to the proposed amending legislation on casual trading. Secondly, an official of my Department, in my enforced absence, has also met a deputation from the Casual Traders Association. I am currently considering a submission which has been made to me by the association.

I am, I believe, fully aware of and appreciate the concerns of the casual trading community in general and of the Dublin casual trading community in particular regarding the new Bill. While a further meeting with a deputation from the Dublin inner city area might, therefore, not be necessary, I see no objection to a further meeting with a further deputation consisting of the Inner City Organisation Network and unregistered traders should they wish to contact my office to make the necessary arrangements.
