Ceist:106 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the number of EEC, EC and EU directives which have come to his Department since Ireland joined the European Community.

Many changes in ministerial responsibilities for the functions now discharged by my Department have taken place over the years since we joined the European Communities in 1973. It would be effectively impossible, without major expense of time and effort, to state which directives might have been for the present Department of Enterprise and Employment. The Commission's Official Journal, copies of which are placed in the Oireachtas Library, contain the text of Council and Commission directives as adopted. The European Commission also publishes an annual report on the monitoring of the application of Community law. Its most recent such report, the tenth annual report published in April 1993, outlining the position at 31 December 1992, indicated that 1,088 directives were applicable to Ireland.
