Vol. 442 No. 3

Written Answers. - Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

117 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Environment when the report outlining the steps that are being taken to comply with the decisions made at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro on greenhouse gas emissions and measures being taken to reduce their impact will be submitted; if the September deadline will be met; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland's climate change — CO 2 abatement strategy, which sets out our proposed contribution to overall EU action on CO 2 abatement, was published in June 1993. This strategy document has been submitted to the European Commission and to the interim secretariat of the Framework Convention on Climate Change, which Ireland has now ratified. My Department has recently submitted more detailed information to the European Commission on current and future estimated greenhouse gas emissions. It is intended that the Commission will submit a report to the Secretariat of the Convention, on behalf of the Union and its member states, within the deadline fixed for end-September 1994.
