Vol. 442 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tenant Purchase Scheme.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

118 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment if he will amend, so far as is necessary, the scheme for sale of local authority houses to tenant purchasers to allow a situation that any rent paid by tenant purchaser applicants after the date of application is credited against the purchase price of the house especially where, through no fault of the applicant, delays were experienced; if this concession will be made in respect of tenants who applied to purchase their house where the sale of the house has been delayed for up to four years and more pending completion of a refurbishment scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The administration of the tenant purchase scheme, which has no provision for crediting rents towards purchase payments, is a matter for individual housing authorities. There are no proposals to amend the terms of the scheme at this stage. Local authorities have been asked to complete sales as quickly as possible.
