Vol. 443 No. 2

Written Answers. - Policy of National Museum.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

31 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht his views on the current policy of the National Museum of Ireland not to lend archaeological material to interpretative centres who do not employ trained curators; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is the policy of the National Museum to lend archaeological material only to established county museums operated by a local or regional authority, where a professional curator has been appointed to run the museum and where the security and environmental controls satisfy National Museum specifications. I am informed that these conditions are rigidly applied in the loan of archaeological material for long term, permanent or semi permanent loans.

Given that the National Museum is entrusted on behalf of the people of Ireland with the custody, conservation and exhibition of the national collection of archaeological artifacts, I am satisfied that this is an appropriate policy. I can assure the Deputy that the National Museum will continue to provide professional advice and loans of local artifacts and exhibits to museums satisfying the above criteria.
