Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

46 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the cost of a standard passport in each of the member states of the European Union expressed in local currencies and also in ECUs to give comparative figures.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 38 and 46 together.

The cost of a standard 10 year Irish passport is IR£45.

It is not possible, in the time available, to complete a general international survey of standard passport fees. The costs in EU member states are set out in the following tabular statement. As the validity period of standard passports varies between member states, this is also indicated. The ECU equivalents quoted are calculated on the basis of the exchange rates applicable on 27 May 1994.
When account is taken of variations in the passport validity periods between member states, the Irish passport ranks fifth in the cost of standard passports issued in the EU. It should be noted, however, in the case of Italy, that in addition to the standard passport fee of L8,800, ecu 4.72, there is also a government tax of L60,000, ecu 32.15, per year which must be paid for travel outside the EU.
