Vol. 443 No. 5

Written Answers. - Inspectors of Taxes.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

61 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Finance the number of investigating inspectors dealing with tax avoidance and fraud in the Dublin area.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that inspectors of taxes are, to a certain extent, engaged in combating tax evasion, fraud and avoidance.

The Dublin area for organisational purposes includes counties Meath and Wicklow and parts of counties Kildare, Louth and Westmeath. In the Head Office of the Chief Inspector of Taxes there are five specialist inspectors dedicated to anti-avoidance work and 16 Investigation Branch Inspectors dedicated to anti-fraud work. Because of the volume and size of cases the work of these officers primarily relates to the Dublin area. In addition, there are 150 inspectors and 103 others also engaged on audit and compliance outdoor operations in the Dublin area. Their functions include identifying and dealing with tax avoidance and fraudulent tax evasion in that area.
