Vol. 443 No. 5

Written Answers. - Funding for National Regional Game Councils.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

62 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance the money that is being given to the National Regional Game Councils; the way in which it is to be spent; and the allocations that are being made for conservation bodies that do not kill wildlife.

The National Association of Regional Game Councils do not receive funding from the Vote for the Office of Public Works.

The 1994 allocations for membership contributions of conservation bodies are — (a) Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats — £1,800; (b) Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals — £2,000; (c) Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitats — £2,000; (d) International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling — £20,000; (e) IUCN — The World Conservation Union — £6,200; (f) International Wetlands Research Bureau — £2,300; (g) Eurosite — European Natural Sites Twinning Programme — £800.

As well as the contributions for membership the Office of Public Works are giving the following assistance to conservation bodies in 1994: (1) Irish Wildlife Conservancy — part funding of the Corncrake Friendly Farming Scheme — £20,000; (2) British Trust for Ornithology — bird-ringing services in this country — £3,200.
Finally, Office of Public Works provides assistance for research, surveys and publications to diverse conservation orientated individuals and organisations.
