Vol. 443 No. 5

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointment.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

102 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education if she has received a request for the appointment of a remedial teacher from a school (details supplied) in County Cork; if so, the reason this appointment was not sanctioned; if she will review the decision in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

112 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education if she has received a request from a school (details supplied) in County Cork, that it should be provided with the services of a remedial teacher on a part-time basis; and if she will respond favourably to this request.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 102 and 112 together.

My Department has received a request for a shared remedial teacher from the school in question. This request was considered in connection with the allocation of an additional 100 remedial posts for primary schools, which will bring the total in place to 1,133.

The posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need, following the collection of data from schools by my Department's Primary Inspectorate. Unfortunately, the school mentioned by the Deputy was not successful on this occasion.

However, I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of a broader commitment to appoint a substantial number of additional teachers in the coming years.

The needs of all schools, including the school mentioned by the Deputy, will be considered in this context.
