Vol. 444 No. 1

Written Answers. - Air Pollution Control.

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

49 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the fact that bus exhaust emissions are a serious contributor to pollution in our cities, the regulations, if any, that are in place, in line with our European obligations under Directive 93/59/EEC, to introduce measures against air pollution by motor vehicle emissions; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

, (Wexford): Two sets of regulations have already been made to give effect to relevant EU Directives relating to vehicle emissions. As a result, new vehicles including petrol and diesel engined buses, cannot enter into service unless they meet strict standards specified for air pollutants.

Directive 93/59/EEC specifies analogous air pollution standards for new light commercial vehicles, including some mini-buses, with effect from 1 October, 1994. I will make regulations shortly to give effect to this Directive.
