Vol. 444 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dublin Taxi and Hackney Licences.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

66 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment the current number of taxi and hackney plates in Dublin; if hackney plates are still being issued; if so, the monthly average; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Taxi and private hire, or hackney, licences are granted by the Garda Commissioner. I understand that the number of taxis licensed to operate in the Dublin taximeter area is 1,974.

There are no geographical restrictions on the operation of hackneys and such licences are not granted by the Garda Commissioner in respect of specific areas. There are no numerical restrictions on the granting of new private hire-hackney-licences; such licences may be granted to suitable applicants by the Garda Commissioner. My Department has no information as to the number of hackneys currently providing a service in Dublin or the number of new licences granted by the Garda Commissioner in any period.
