Vol. 444 No. 7

Written Answers. - Reach Ireland Submission.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

141 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health whether he has received a submission from Reach Ireland in relation to requirements of, and possible means of assistance, to children born with birth defects; if he has evaluated the submission with a view to ascertaining the extent to which he might be in a position to respond favourably within a reasonable time; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I met a delegation from the Cork branch of Reach Ireland on Monday, 27 June 1994 and the following issues were discussed: the establishment of a national register of birth defects; research into the causes of specific birth defects and the provision of medical cards for all children born with birth defects.

The position in relation to these matters is as set out in my reply to parliamentary questions Nos. 159 and 165 of 24 February 1994 — Official Report, Volume 439, No. 4, columns 865 and 866.
