Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Segregation of Rubbish.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

248 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the segregation of rubbish by domestic household consumers is compulsory by law in some countries; and, in view of the fact that this reduces the costs involved in recycling and makes it a commercially viable operation leading to the creation of jobs, if he will consider introducing similar laws in this State. [559/94]

Wexford): The strategy document “Recycling for Ireland”, which the Government approved for publication in July 1994, has set targets for increased recycling of Irish municipal wastes and identified a range of policies and actions to this end. The strategy document also recognises the important role of recycling in terms of job creation.

I propose to introduce a Waste Bill during this Dáil session which will contain extensive provisions for the prevention, minimisation, segregation and recovery of waste, including household waste.
