The number of staff expressed in wholetime equivalence employed in the clerical-administrative grade category in each health board for each of the years 1989 to 1993 is set out in the following tabular statement.
The clerical-administrative grade category is a broad designation which encompasses many functions in the health services and includes: medical records staff; community welfare officers; medical, surgical and out-patient appointments staff; health centre receptionists; consultants' secretaries; those providing secretarial and clerical back-up to community care and other services.
The vast majority of this grade category are involved in tasks which directly relate to and impact on patient care.
The growth in this grade category over this period reflects the enhancement of existing health services and the introduction of new service initiatives. These include hospital, community care and mental handicap service developments and the implementation of the Nursing Homes Act, 1991.
