Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Provision of Regional Technical Colleges.

Ray Burke

Ceist:

31 Mr. R. Burke asked the Minister for Education, in view of the shortage of third level places in the country and the growth of the number of children attending primary and post primary schools in the area, if she will sanction the provision of a third level college in the Fingal area of County Dublin. [1067/94]

Austin Currie

Ceist:

136 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education, in view of the commencement of work on the new Town Centre for Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, whether she will announce her plans for the proposed regional technical college for the area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1234/94]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 31 and 136 together.

The question of a regional technical college in Blanchardstown and other locations has to be considered in the context of the future development of the higher education sector in Ireland. I have asked a steering committee, established under the aegis of the Higher Education Authority, to advise me on the needs of the sector to the year 2105.

The committee is due to submit an interim report to me by November.

When I receive the report I will be giving it my urgent attention.
