Written Answers. - Appointment of Remedial Teachers.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

54 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the criteria used by her Department in the selection of schools for the appointment of remedial teachers. [1148/94]

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

157 Mr. Gilmore asked the asked the Minster for Education the criteria used by her Department in the selection of schools for the appointment of remedial teachers. [

I propose to take Questions Nos. 54 and 157 together.

Schools are selected for receipt of remedial teacher allocations on the basis of priority of need as determined by my Department's primary inspectorate and having regard to data submitted by the schools. In the current year, I announced the allocation of an additional 100 remedial teachers to primary schools. This brings the total number of such teachers now in place to 1,133. I will be keeping the need for further provision in this area under ongoing review.

In the allocation of remedial teacher posts at second level, schools are also selected on the basis of priority of need. Regard is had to the existing provision within the school and the use made of it. The recommendations of my Department's psychological service are also taken into account.

Additional teaching posts have been allocated to second level schools in disadvantaged areas. Some of these posts would have been used for remedial purposes. Selection of schools for the allocation of these posts was done on the basis of criteria agreed between representatives of management, teachers, parents and my Department.
