Vol. 446 No. 1

Written Answers. - Travel Tax.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

54 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that the tax paid by Irish citizens travelling to other jurisdictions in the EU, except when travelling to Northern Ireland, does not infringe any EU law, particularly any relating to freedom of movement within the EU; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [619/94]

I am satisfied that the tax in question does not infringe EU law. Ireland is not the only EU member state which has such a travel tax. The United Kingdom for example, will shortly introduce a travel tax from 1 November 1994.
