Vol. 446 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public Sector Pay Increases.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

55 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Finance the total cost to the Exchequer in a full year of the public sector pay increases announced by him on 30 August 1994; the average increase granted in monetary terms; and the biggest increase granted to a chief executive of a semi-State body, a senior civil servant and a Government office holder. [1592/94]

The pay increases involved were recommended in Report No. 35 of the Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Sector. The cost to the Exchequer of the increases for those actually dealt with in the report is estimated a £1.6 million or £2,700 on average. The total cost, including knock-on effects, in a full year of the increases referred to is estimated at £3 million. The highest increase recommended in the report for chief executives of State-sponsored bodies was in respect of Aer Lingus — some £19,000 a year. In the case of the Civil Service, the highest increases, about £15,000 a year, were in respect of the secretaries of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Health and Transport, Energy and Communications whose positions were specifically upgraded. The highest increase recommended for a member of the Government was in respect of the Taoiseach — £13,900.
