Vol. 446 No. 3

Written Answers. - Trade Union Dues.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

186 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the reason £1 per week is being deducted from community employment workers for trade union membership; if it is a condition of the scheme that they join the union; and if he will enter into discussions with the scheme workers alliance of Exchange Buildings, Prince's Street, Cork, regarding this issue in view of the fact that they state that there was an arbitrary increase from 50p to £1 and that no consultations took place with the scheme workers. [2169/94]

Payment of weekly trade union dues is not necessary for participants on community employment. Membership of a trade union is entirely voluntary and is a matter for individual participants.
