Vol. 446 No. 4

Written Answers. - Energy Matters.

James Leonard

Ceist:

158 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if there have been any cross-Border discussions on a joint approach to biomass production, for example short rotation forestry. [2318/94]

There are ongoing contacts and co-operation at official level on energy matters including biomass production for energy purposes. An example of this co-operation is the Conference on Renewable Energy and Economic Development which will be held in Galway on 2 and 3 November 1994, which has been jointly organised by the Irish Energy Centre and the Department of Economic Development, Northern Ireland.

The aim of the conference is to promote the use of renewable energy sources throughout Ireland and to provide a forum for discussing the potential for economic development in Ireland through the exploitation of renewable energy opportunities. This is one of a series of jointly organised cross-Border conferences designed to focus on issues and challenges that face Ireland, North and South.
