Vol. 446 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

186 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Education her views on whether it is necessary that schools, particularly in disadvantaged areas, be provided with remedial teachers on a basis independent of the pupil/teacher ratio quota; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2887/94]

Remedial teacher posts are allocated on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by data collected by my Department's Primary Inspectorate.

All such posts are allocated on an exquota basis and as such constitute an additional teaching resource over and above that required by the pupil/teacher ratio.
In addition to being eligible for support under the general remedial teacher service, schools in disadvantaged areas can also apply for additional special supports under the disadvantaged areas scheme. Concessionary teacher posts allocated under this scheme are also allocated on anex-quota basis.
