Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Drink Driving Laws.

Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

113 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment if he will review the Road Traffic Act, 1994, in view of the criticism and public outcry against the severity of the legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1648/95]

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

131 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment if he has completed his examination of the demands to introduce a cash fine for those caught for drink driving offences with a level of alchohol of between 80-100 milligrams. [1357/95]

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

143 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the express concerns of members of the drinks industry regarding the drink-driving laws and their recommendations on graded penalties, if he will consider the merits of the proposals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1541/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 113, 131 and 143 together.

I announced on 4 January last that, while the Government agrees with the essential thrust of the amendments made to the Road Traffic Act, in particular the new blood alcohol level of 80 milligrams, I would be reviewing the submissions of various groups, and meeting a number of them, to assess the impact of the new measures. I am now considering the written and oral submissions made to me and I will make an announcement about the matter generally as soon as possible.
