Vol. 448 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Noel Dempsey. I now call on Deputy Dempsey to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

Under Standing Order 30 I seek permission to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following matter of extreme public concern and importance requiring consideration, namely the urgent measures required to be taken to alleviate the distress and losses suffered by those affected by recent flooding and also the long term measures the Government proposes to take to limit the effects of such flooding in the future.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion. I understand further that the Minister for the Environment, Deputy Howlin, will be answering questions on this subject tomorrow.

On a point of information, surely this is a matter of urgency——

Deputy Andrews——

I am not certain whether you have been in the midlands recently. People's houses and farms are being flooded and you say it is not a matter of urgency.

I am sure the Deputy will find ways and means of raising this matter in the proper fashion.

It is still raining in the west.
