Vol. 449 No. 5

Written Answers. - International Peace-Keeping Missions.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

11 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Defence if the restructuring proposals currently being considered are likely to have any impact on Ireland's overseas commitments with the United Nations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3978/95]

One of the fundamental roles of the Defence Forces which formed the basis for the efficiency audit group review is participation in United Nations missions in the cause of international peace. For many years the Defence Forces have served with distinction under the UN flag. The policy of contributing to international peace-keeping missions has been supported by all parties in the House and the Government has no intention of changing this policy.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

12 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the total amount of moneys due to his Department by the United Nations in respect of peace-keeping missions; the dates these moneys are due from; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3725/95]

The total amount currently due to the Department of Defence from the United Nations in respect of peace-keeping missions is approximately £10.6 million. The arrears have accrued on a cumulative basis and it is not possible, therefore, to provide specific dates covering those periods in respect of which the moneys are due. The amount outstanding is the subject of ongoing representations to the United Nations by the Department of Defence and the Department of Foreign Affairs.
