Vol. 449 No. 5

Written Answers. - Salmon Fishing Season.

Brendan Kenneally

Ceist:

28 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for the Marine if he will extend the salmon fishing season in the Waterford Estuary and generally off the Waterford Coast to its previous completion date of August 15 in view of the later arrival of salmon each year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1156/95]

It has not been the practice in recent years, nor would it be in accord with established policy objectives, to extend drift netting seasons.

As regards the particular area mentioned by the Deputy, I would point out that the salmon drift net fishermen along the south coast already have the benefit of a very lengthy season which has been in place since 1980 and which extends from 15 March until 31 July each year.
