228 Mr. Cowen asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total number of livestock exported for the year ending 31 December 1994; the total number exported to non-EU destinations; the total number exported to EU destinations; the total number exported to the United Kingdom; the total number exported via the United Kingdom to continental Europe for supply to the veal trade; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The number of live cattle and calves exported in 1994 was as follows:

(including Northern Ireland)	18,530	0

The available statistics do not distinguish between calves intended for veal production and those intended for other purposes but it can be assumed that the majority of calf exports were for veal production. Prior to September 1994 up to 70 per cent of calves went to the Continent via the UK but since then virtually all calves are being sent directly to the Continent.
