Vol. 450 No. 7

Written Answers. - Revitalisation of Public Enterprise.

Pat Upton

Ceist:

11 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the plans, if any, he has to revitalise public enterprise; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5356/95]

I assume that the Deputy's question relates specifically to the commercial semi-State companies which operate under the aegis of my Department. These are Irish Steel Ltd., Nítrigin Éireann Teoranta (NET) and Irish Fertilizer Industries (IFI).

Each of these companies has medium term plans for its development and I have discussed these plans with the chairmen of the companies. These companies are commodity producers who have to compete in volatile international markets and are exposed to the stiff winds of international competition. The companies face significant challenges to maintain viability and develop in the short and medium term. The Government is working in an interactive manner with the companies to ensure that all necessary changes will be managed in the best interests of employees, taxpayers and consumers.
