Vol. 450 No. 7

Written Answers. - Plastics Raw Materials Costs.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

86 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if his attention has been drawn to the threat to jobs in this country arising from the 65 per cent price increase in high impact polythene and related raw materials; and the action, if any, he proposes to take to avert a crisis in the industry. [5685/95]

I am aware of the rise in the cost of plastics raw materials. The rise in prices is part of worldwide increase in raw materials generally from which Irish industry is not exempt. I have asked the industrial development agencies to monitor the situation and the feedback to date is that there is no crisis in the various sectors affected, with companies being able to pass on the increases to the end user. The agencies will continue to monitor the situation and will be available to advise and, where possible, assist companies who experience particular difficulties.
