Vol. 452 No. 3

Written Answers. - Operation Delay.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

87 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Health the reason a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 has been waiting over nine months for a knee replacement operation; when he envisages this operation will be carried out; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8023/95]

Limerick East): I am informed by the Adelaide Hospital that the patient concerned was placed on the waiting list for total knee replacement in August 1994. The hospital authorities are not in a position to provide an exact admission for this patient at present. However, I understand that the hospital has experienced an imbalance in demand in relation to male and female orthopaedic beds, and it intends to rectify the situation by increasing the complement of female orthopaedic beds as and from this week. This should allow for a corresponding increase in the throughput of female orthopaedic patients at the hospital.

The Deputy will appreciate that the admission of a patient to hospital is a matter for the consultant concerned and each patient is assessed to determine medical priority. Should the patient in question feel concerned about her condition, she should return to her general practitioner who would be in the best position to emphasise the urgency of her case directly to her consultant.
