Vol. 452 No. 5

Written Answers. - Institute of Public Health.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

47 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the proposed Institute of Public Health in Ireland, in particular the North-South dimension; and when the institute will be established. [8311/95]

Limerick East): There is a general recognition of the need to improve the collection and analysis of health data relating to communicable and non-communicable diseases both North and South. Since 1994, a small working group chaired jointly by the Chief Medical Officer of the Northern Ireland Department of Health and Social Services and the Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Health in the Republic, has been examining the feasibility of establishing a multi-disciplinary Institute of Public Health in Ireland.

Following the recent Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Conference held on 28 April 1995, it was agreed that this matter would be further considered at the next North/South bilateral meeting of Health Ministers which will be held towards the end of this year.
