Vol. 452 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Bathing Water Quality.

Eoin Ryan

Ceist:

55 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 27 of 27 April 1995, if he will list those beaches and bathing places in Dublin which do not comply with the appropriate regulation; the extent of non-compliance in each instance; the situation this year compared with last year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [88226/95]

As indicated in the reply to Question No. 27 on 27 April 1995, the Quality of Bathing Water Regulations, 1992, as amended, prescribed bathing water quality standards for 11 bathing areas in the Dublin area. Results of sampling at other locations are not reported to my Department.

In 1994, monitoring showed that all the 11 bathing areas complied with the prescribed standards. As regards 1993, Burrow Beach, Sutton, and Dollymount Strand each recorded a single breach of the mandatory EU standard for the microbiological parameter faecal coliforms; Dollymount also breached the standard for two physico-chemical parameters — colour and transparency — on one occasion in 1993.
