Vol. 452 No. 8

Written Answers. - Increase in Crime.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

184 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to an increase in the number of break-ins and attempted burglaries in an area (details supplied) in Dublin 5 in recent weeks; if she will initiate measures including increased foot patrols by gardaí to deal with this situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8663/95]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that three local persons, who are now in custody, have been charged with a large number of burglaries in the general area, several of which were committed in the particular areas mentioned by the Deputy. I am also informed that the targeting of local suspects is ongoing.

It is expected that the downward trend in crime levels will continue. In addition, the Garda is satisfied that the specific crime prevention measures put in place in the area will further assist this downward trend. These measures include: the use of checkpoints, targeted patrolling, surveillance operations, plainclothes operations and the deployment of Garda Juvenile Liaision Officers to organise programmes designed to educate young people on issues such as criminal damage, substance abuse and other relevant matters.
