Vol. 452 No. 8

Written Answers. - Crime and Vandalism.

Pat Upton

Ceist:

183 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice the measures if any, which were taken since 1993 to deal with the growing problem of law and order/crime and vandalism; and the new initiatives which she proposes to take to further deal with this problem. [8644/95]

The matter raised by the Deputy is not one which lends itself to a detailed response by way of an answer to a parliamentary question. Existing measures which are wide-ranging and ongoing include initiatives in relation to the Garda Síochána, prisons, criminal law reform and so on, particulars of which have been outlined in reply to various Dáil questions and public statements. I will ensure that the various measures, which have been initiated, are implemented in full.

I, for my part, will be taking some further initiatives. I will, for example, be bringing forward comprehensive proposals to the Government in the near future to deal with various aspects of the drugs problem including the issue of inter-agency co-operation. I will bring forward major criminal law reform in the period ahead and will take various other initiatives also, some of which will require Government approval before I make announcements on them.

I am confident that the measures which are ongoing, taken together with the various initiatives I plan to take, will represent a real and substantial response to the problem of crime.
