77 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to concerns that recent market price increases for milk have not been passed on to producers by some co-operatives; the proposals, if any, he has to compel co-operatives to pass on price increases to producers within a specified period of time; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The market in the dairy sector is strong and has resulted in satisfactory returns to milk producers. A number of processors have recently announced increases in producer prices. However the level of price paid by milk purchasers to their producers is a commercial matter and it would not be appropriate for me to become directly involved.
