Vol. 452 No. 8

Written Answers. - Manufacture of Poteen.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

90 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Finance the licence situation in regard to the manufacture of poteen in the case of a firm (details supplied) in County Clare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8597/95]

The company concerned has a licence from the Revenue Commissioners to manufacture spirit drinks. One of the drinks that they manufacture for export is described as "poteen". I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that it is their policy to object to the distribution in the State of products so described. The reasons for this include the strong association of the name "poteen" with illicitly distilled spirits and the confusion that use of the term would give rise to the public mind as to the duty status of such spirits.
