Vol. 453 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fish Processing.

Brendan Kenneally

Ceist:

33 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for the Marine the total amount of money invested by his Department and fish processing industries in the research and development of new products in each of the years 1992, 1993 and 1994; and the importance he places on research and development. [9055/95]

The fragmented nature of the processing sector has resulted in a less than adequate technological — marketing skill base. Where these barriers have been overcome, however, there has been significant market place success. The development of new products and improving the quality and competitiveness of existing products is a key objective.

The marine research measure under the Fisheries Operational Programme has as one of its objectives, the development of new project based research and development into added value fish products.

BIM already assists and advises processing firms on product development and other specialist aspects. In-plant assistance is given to firms on new fish products including feasibility studies and research and development.

It is estimated that processing companies invested in the region of £2 million on R&D projects over the period 1992-94. Grant assistance towards this investment amounted to approximately £1 million. The facilities of the National Food Centre were availed of in several of these projects.
