Vol. 453 No. 6

Written Answers. - Civil Service Recruitment.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

40 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Finance the procedures involved in relation to recruitment to the Civil Service; if recruitment will take place this year; and if special mechanisms are in place to facilitate local authority employees transferring to the Civil Service. [9792/95]

Recruitment to the Civil Service is with certain exceptions — such as recruitment to subordinate positions — carried out by way of competitions held by the Civil Service Commissioners under the provisions of the Civil Service Commissioners Act, 1956. Open competitions for general service grades as well as for various professional, technical and departmental grades are held as and when necessary. As regards general service grades it is intended that competitions for positions as Executive Officer and Administrative Officer will be advertised later this year. No special mechanisms apply in respect of local authority employees who would have to compete at a competition run by the Civil Service Commissioners if they wish to obtain a position in the Central Government Civil Service.
