Vol. 453 No. 6

Written Answers. - Business Expansion Scheme.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

41 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Finance if he intends to allow family pig farmers to avail of the business expansion scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9837/95]

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that in order to qualify under the business expansion scheme a company must be a qualifying company carrying on qualifying trading operations as provided for in Chapter III of Part I of the Finance Act, 1984 as amended.

Meat processed within the State in an establishment approved and inspected in accordance with the European Communities (Fresh Meat) Regulations 1987 i.e. the slaughtering and processing of meat in such an establishment would be regarded as a qualifying trading operation. Where a company as part of that trade, rears pigs for slaughtering the whole operation from rearing of pigs to the meat processing will constitute one trade and will be a qualifying trading operation for BES purposes. However, the rearing of pigs only either by a company or an individual would not be so regarded.

I do not propose to extend the scheme to such activities.
