Vol. 453 No. 6

Written Answers. - Child Abuse.

Joe Costello

Ceist:

94 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to allegations of abuse made by a former employee of a special school (details supplied) in relation to that school; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10073/95]

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

106 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if the allegations contained in a letter (details supplied) have been investigated. [9795/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 94 and 106 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that these matters were investigated by the gardaí. In relation to the allegations of physical and sexual abuse, a file was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions who concluded that there was no evidence to substantiate the allegations of abuse and in July, 1994 directed that there was to be no prosecution.

In relation to the other matter raised, i.e. alleged financial irregularities, it is understood that an audit conducted by the Internal Audit Unit of the Department of Education, some time ago, uncovered certain management control weaknesses at Trinity House. As a result the Fraud Squad at the request of the Department of Education are currently investigating the matter.
