Vol. 453 No. 6

Written Answers. - Report of Committee for Prevention of Torture.

Joe Costello

Ceist:

99 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice if she has received the report on Ireland submitted by the Committee for Prevention of Torture established under the United Nations Convention; if so, the plans, if any, she has to publish it; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9721/95]

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the Report of the Committee which was set up under the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) in 1987.

The committee carried out a visit to this country in the autumn of 1993 and submitted its report of the visit to the Government in June, 1994. A draft response to the committee will be considered by the Government shortly as also will be the question of publication of the CPT report itself. I will make a further announcement in due course.
