Vol. 453 No. 6

Written Answers. - Constitutional Amendments.

Eamon Walsh

Ceist:

101 Mr. E. Walsh asked the Minister for Justice the views, if any, she has on a constitutional amendment, in addition to the one proposed on the bail issue, to enable the District Court to sentence consecutively and to periods of imprisonment for at least two to three years; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9754/95]

Generally, the maximum term of imprisonment which may be imposed by the District Court for any offence is one year. However, the court may, in certain circumstances, impose consecutive sentences the aggregate term of which does not exceed two years.

I have no proposals at this time to increase the sentencing jurisdiction of the District Court and consequently the question as to whether a constitutional amendment might be required for that purpose has not arisen.
