Vol. 453 No. 8

Written Answers. - Litter Wardens.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

14 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make it obligatory for local authorities to appoint litter wardens in an effort to control and reduce this widespread and increasing blight on urban and rural areas. [9994/95]

I am concerned that not all local authorities employ litter wardens at present. I intend to develop a sustained and effective anti-litter initiative and I will be strongly encouraging local authorities to employ full-time litter wardens as part of an action programme to combat the persistent and visible problem of litter.

I will be announcing specific measures in the coming months as part of the anti-litter programme.
