Vol. 455 No. 2

Written Answers. - Allocation of Garda Manpower.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

148 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if she will have arrangements made with local gardaí to patrol the Sunday morning street market at Finglas, Dublin 11. [11964/95]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda manpower to individual areas.

I am informed by them that the street market referred to by the Deputy is held on Cardiffbridge Road, Finglas between Cappagh Road and Mellows Road on Sundays between 9.30 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. This area is policed by the Garda attached to Finglas and is patrolled in conjunction with other areas in the Finglas locality. Both uniform and plain clothes personnel and mobile patrol pay particular attention to the area where the street market is held.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the policing arrangements pertaining to the street market in Finglas are currently being reviewed by the district officer at Cabra with a view to ensuring adequate Garda coverage of the area concerned.

Ceist:

149 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the response of the gardaí to the request of the Cherry Orchard Development Council, Dublin 10, for increased Garda foot patrols in this area; and if the gardaí could liaise with Dublin Bus to ensure the same bus services to this area as to any other. [12031/95]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of manpower and resources to individual areas.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Cherry Orchard area is patrolled by gardaí attached to Ballyfermot Garda station. The current manpower at Ballyfermot station is 82. The Garda authorities are satisfied with the present policing arrangements for the area but the position will be kept under review.

The Cherry Orchard area is patrolled by local mobile patrols, both uniform and plain clothes. In addition, the drugs unit based at Ballyfermot station also regularly patrol the area. This is augmented by the divisional task force based at Crumlin who also patrol Cherry Orchard.

I am also informed by the Garda authorities that a Sergeant and four gardaí are employed on community policing duties in the Cherry Orchard area. They partol the area on foot and liaise on an ongoing basis with the local community. They also attend meetings and are involved in community based activities in the area.

I also understand from the Garda authorities that there is constant liaison between Garda officers and the Dublin Bus manager responsible for the Cherry Orchard area. This liaison is designed to ensure that bus services for the area are not interfered with and are maintained.
