Vol. 455 No. 3

Written Answers - Gorey (Wexford) School.

John Browne

Ceist:

93 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Education the reason a remedial teacher was not allocated to a school (details supplied) in County Wexford on a shared basis in view of the fact that other schools in the area were allocated the services of a remedial teacher. [12077/95]

I recently allocated 55 remedial teacher posts to the primary school sector. These posts are effective from the commencement of the 1995-96 school year. This allocation brings the total number of remedial teacher posts in the primary sector to 1,188.

These posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need following the collection and analysis of data by my Department's Primary Inspectorate. Unfortunately, the school referred to by the Deputy was not successful on this occasion.

In keeping with the Government's commitment to increasing access to remedial education, I will continue to review needs in this area and consider how best these needs can be addressed within available resources. The needs of the school referred to by the Deputy will be considered in this context.
