Vol. 455 No. 4

Written Answers. - Copyright Material for Blind Persons.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

140 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will introduce regulations to require that all copyright material be made available in digital format to an agency approved for the conversion of such material into a format readable by blind and visually impaired persons. [12364/95]

The area of copyright is currently the subject of a comprehensive review by the Department of Enterprise and Employment. In that context the issue raised by the Deputy is being fully examined and, indeed, the Department has received a comprehensive submission from the National Council for the Blind on the subject.

The outcome of the review will lead to a comprehensive new piece of copyright legislation which will attempt to ensure that the rights of owners and the interests of users of copyright materials are catered for in an equitable manner, given our international obligations in this area.
