Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - National Lottery Funding.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

124 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if national lottery funding is made available to his Department to finance a scheme of grants; and if he will give details of this funding and the procedures involved for application. [13093/95]

The following is the information requested by the Deputy:

Bíonn soláthar mar seo a leanas i Vóta mo Roinne as fáltais an chrannchuir náisiúnta ar mhaithe le cur chun cinn na Gaeilge:

— Fomhírcheann J: deontas bliantúil do Bhord na Gaeilge (£2.25 milliúin i 1995); agus
— Fomhírcheann K: deontais bhliantúla d'eagrais dheonacha Ghaeilge agus cúnamh do thograí ilgnéitheacha Gaeilge (£2.834 milliúin i 1995).
Maidir le Bord na Gaeilge agus na heagrais dheonacha Gaeilge, bunaítear deontas mo Roinne ar riachtanais na n-eagras sin agus ar bhonn pleananna oibre uathu.
I gcás na dtograí ilgnéitheacha Gaeilge cuirtear fógra sna nuachtáin náisiúnta ag lorg iarratas faoi spriocdáta áirithe. Breithnítear na hiarratais uile a fhaightear i gcomhlint lena chéile, ag féachaint don soláthar teoranta airgid a bhíonn ar fáil le caitheamh ar na tograí sin agus ceadaítear cúnamh i leith na dtograí a mheastar go bhfuil an tábhacht is mó leo maidir le cur chun cinn na Gaeilge.
An allocation from national lottery funding of £1.55 million is provided in the current year under Subhead D of my Department's Vote for the National Heritage Council and the new Heritage Council which succeeded it on 10.7.95. The allocation is used to provide grant-aid for certain Heritage projects and for The Discovery Programme.
The allocation for heritage grant-aided projects is £1.05 million, which includes administration expenses, while The Discovery Programme, which is an archaeological research programme, is in receipt of £0.5 million. Applications for heritage grants must be made on a prescribed form and all such applications are assessed and decided upon by the council on their merits from the heritage perspective.
National lottery funding provided under Subhead C1 of my Department's Vote (£3.81 million in 1995) is allocated directly to the major cultural institutions coming within the remit of my Department and is not used to finance schemes of grants. The same is true of the national lottery funding provided under Vote 43 — National Gallery (£0.245 million in 1995) and Vote 44 — An Chomhairle Ealaíon (£3.707 million in 1995).
