Brendan Smith

Ceist:

138 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for the Environment the terms of reference given to the consultant appointed to review the funding of local government; the date for the completion of the report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12659/95]

Tom Kitt

Ceist:

167 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has in relation to the funding of local authorities. [13059/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 138 and 167 together.

In line with a commitment given in the policy agreement,A Government of Renewal, I have engaged consultants to undertake a professional study on how a fair, equitable and reasonable system of local authority funding might be introduced. This study commenced in July and I expect that stage 1 will be completed by the end of this year. This will bring forward funding options to be examined in depth in stage 2.
